Headmaster's Corner

Dr. Chamberlain

I recently came across the following quote from Dr. Ken Smitherman, President of the Association of Christian Schools International. ACSI has an international membership of over 5,000 Christian schools world wide. South Shore Christian Academy is a member of ACSI.

"I would claim that Christian schooling is not about running or hiding from--rather it is about embracing and pursuing the mind of Christ. It is about pursuing the real understanding of what it means to be salt and light, about transformation by the renewing of the mind. It is about the development of fruitful bearers of the image of Christ in a world gone bland with its salt-less-ness; a world staggering in an abundance of darkness where the light has been all but snuffed out."

The mission of SSCA is to educate children and young people with the mind of Christ. We want our students to achieve academically and grow intellectually.

But even more, we want our students to be prepared for life because Christ, the creator and sustainer of the universe, possesses "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

The life and mind of Christ is nurtured every day at SSCA in our classrooms through first rate teaching. It is also nurtured in the lives of our students through redemptive relationships with teachers who believe that reconciling the heart and mind to God is the foundation of our common work at South Shore Christian Academy.

Yes. The First Annual Powder Puff Derby Kicks Off!

Grade 7 played against grade 8 on Thursday.  Grade 8 secured a 26-12 victory despite strong coaching by grade 7.  On Monday, October 6 grades 9 and 12 play, then grades 10 and 11 play on Tuesday.  The winners from those two games will play in the final on Thursday, October 9.

All girls played a very impressive game, executing plays by completing passes, throwing and receiving laterals (we all love the flea-flicker), and "breaking for daylight".

The 2009 Junior Miss Scholarship Program

 lea

America's Junior Miss is a non-profit nationwide scholarship program for college bound high school senior girls.  Founded in 1957, it is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the United States.  It is headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, and has local and state programs in every state.

Lea Bartolo, a senior at SSCA, is a participant in this year's scholarship program.  In addition to her strong academic record, Lea has also worked hard as a member of the Paula Coffey dance studio where she has danced for sixteen years.

Of the scholarship program, Lea explains that she thinks it is a great experience to be involved in a program like Junior Miss.  She is also interested in the scholarship money as she prepares for college.

The program requires Lea to show herself excellent in academics, fitness, talent, personal interview, and presence and composure.  Lea has chosen to perform a lyrical dance to "Cry Out To Jesus", by Third Day, as her required talent.

The 2009 Junior Miss Scholarship Program will be held on Saturday, November 22, at East Bridgewater High School.

Boys Varsity Soccer

As Reported in the Patriot Ledger By Drew Bonifant The Patriot Ledger Posted Oct 02, 2008 @ 12:51 AM Last update Oct 02, 2008 @ 12:54 AM

QUINCY - There was reason to think it wouldn't work. The collaboration of boys soccer players from South Shore Christian Academy and South Shore Votech High School into one team had its issues. Both schools are Mayflower League rivals. One's religious, one's secular. One's in Weymouth, one's in Hanover.

But under the leadership of first-year coach Alan McCall, the SSCVT boys have become one team, and judging by its 4-1-1 record, a pretty good one too.

"It was something I didn't want to highlight, or focus on," he said. "My philosophy is two schools, one team. And you can't tell. They've really melded together faster than I could have anticipated. There's been no division, my-school your-school sort of thing."

The team's quick-forming chemistry makes life easier for McCall, but so does the product on the field.

"It's surprising, in that they lost eight seniors from last year," he said of his team's early success. "We didn't know what the Votech contribution was going to be. It's a pleasant start, but not a surprise."

Much of the reason for the hot start has been the play of SSCVT's three co-captains. Midfielder Lawrence Fagan, the team's only starting senior, has 10 goals and three assists, while juniors Andrew Guenard (four goals, seven assists) and Matt Pucci (four goals, five assists) have contributed to a potent offense.

"Teams can't mark one guy. If they do, the other two make them pay for it," said McCall. "They're very unselfish. They see opportunities, they pass well. They play well together."

Now SSCVT is faced with the momentum going. Of course, McCall's team has shown it's capable of answering a challenge.

"It's worked out for both schools, in keeping it a competitive program," the coach said. "The Votech kids sure have helped. Just the mere fact that kids are out there playing is all the reason you need to see that it's working."

Soccer Fees

The $75.00 soccer fee is now overdue for a select number of Junior Varsity Boy athletes. Please respond promptly to the main office.  Thank you.

Congratulations to the Boys Junior Varsity team, coached by Dave McPherson, who sealed a 6-0 victory over Avon.  Joe Bartolo, John DeRosa, James Burke, and T.J. Vazquez all scored.  John DeRosa had a hat trick with three goals.  Brody Loughlin performed tremendously in net holding a shut out for the team.

Cheerleading

There is a cheerleading meeting for any girls in grades 7-12 who are interested in being an SSCA cheerleader for the 08-09 basketball season.  The meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 8 during lunch in the reception room.

Parent Fellowship is on the move. Don't miss the community FUN!

Parent Fellowship is pleased to provide you with several ways to support SSCA, and to hang out with one another this Fall.

*Now through the end of school we are collecting "Boxtops for Education."

These little squares are found on many grocery products that you probably use.  Please send them into school with your child.  SSCA receives a donation from participating companies. Incentives are given to the Lower School classes who collect the most.  So, please label your donation sheet or envelope.  There is a collection box in the Lower School hallway.

**Right now Boxtops is running a promotion that for every 30 boxtops we send in they will match with 30 bonus boxtops.  It would be great if everyone could send in all the boxtops they have by October 17 in order for us to submit them to Boxtops by the end of October. We have already filled up 30 sheets.  This is a great opportunity to raise extra money for SSCA.

*October 13th there will be a Lower School family event at the Carousel Family Fun Center, 1055 Auburn St., Whitman, MA from 10:00a.m. til noon.

The cost is $3 per person, and $3 for skate rental if needed.  This event is for children Pre-K through grade 6.  All children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

*In November, we are looking forward to Family Movie Nights, and the big Christmas Craft Fair on the 22nd!

Crafters Needed!!

SSCA will be holding its second annual christmas craft fair on Saturday, November 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The cost to rent a table at the fair is $30.00.   Reserve today, space is limited! Please contact Rost Conroy at 781-297-3778 if you're interested in renting a craft table, or would like to donate a craft to our school.
