Dr. Chamberlain

Headmaster's Corner

I recently came across the following quote from Dr. Ken Smitherman, President of the Association of Christian Schools International. ACSI has an international membership of over 5,000 Christian schools world wide. South Shore Christian Academy is a member of ACSI.

"I would claim that Christian schooling is not about running or hiding from--rather it is about embracing and pursuing the mind of Christ. It is about pursuing the real understanding of what it means to be salt and light, about transformation by the renewing of the mind. It is about the development of fruitful bearers of the image of Christ in a world gone bland with its salt-less-ness; a world staggering in an abundance of darkness where the light has been all but snuffed out."

The mission of SSCA is to educate children and young people with the mind of Christ. We want our students to achieve academically and grow intellectually.

But even more, we want our students to be prepared for life because Christ, the creator and sustainer of the universe, possesses "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

The life and mind of Christ is nurtured every day at SSCA in our classrooms through first rate teaching. It is also nurtured in the lives of our students through redemptive relationships with teachers who believe that reconciling the heart and mind to God is the foundation of our common work at South Shore Christian Academy.

Chelsea Reed is Commended by the National Merit Scholarship Program

Senior, Chelsea Reed, has been named a Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.  She has been presented with a Letter of Commendation from SSCA and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

"Recognition of academically talented students and the key role played by schools in their development is essential to the pursuit of educational excellence in our nation," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "The young people named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program.  We hope that this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and that they will continue to diligently pursue their professional goals."

Crafters Needed!!

SSCA will be holding its second annual christmas craft fair on Saturday, November 22 from 10 am to 4 pm.

The cost to rent a table at the fair is $30.00.   Reserve today, space is limited! Please contact Rost Conroy at 781-297-3778 if you're interested in renting a craft table, or would like to donate a craft to our school.

Sponsored by the SSCA Parent Fellowship Committee.

Parent Fellowship is on the move. Don't miss the community FUN!

Parent Fellowship is pleased to provide you with several ways to support SSCA, and to hang out iwth one another this Fall.

*Now through October 7th, the students are selling Yankee Candles.

The price of the candles have not been inflated in any way. By purchasing them through this school sale, you will help Parent Fellowship raise funds for SSCA.

Candles are expected to arrive for your early Christmas wrapping!  As with any fund raising, we strongly urge parents to assist their children when they contact friends and relatives.  Please do NOT have your children go "door to door," for safety's sake!

*Now through the end of school we are collecting "Boxtops for Education."

These little squares are found on many grocery products that you probably use.  Please send them into school with your child.  SSCA receives a donation from participating companies. Incentives are given to the Lower School classes who collect the most.  So, please label your donation sheet or envelope.  There is a collection box in the Lower School hallway.

*October 13th there will be a Lower School family event at the Carousel Family Fun Center, 1055 Auburn St., Whitman, MA from 10:00a.m. til noon.

The cost is $3 per person, and $3 for skate rental if needed.  This event is for children Pre-K through grade 6.  All children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

*In November, we are looking forward to Family Movie Nights, and the big Christmas Craft Fair on the 22nd!

CTY Johns Hopkins Talent Search

Twelve students from SSCA have qualified to participate in the 2009 CTY Talent Search sponsored by Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.  The purpose of the Talent Search is to identify, assess, and recognize the academic abilities of highly able students.

To qualify for the Talent Search, a student must score in the 95% or higher on selected sections of a nationally-normed test.  The Talent Search offers a variety of services and opportunities for students after they take the SAT or ACT standardized tests.

Important Reminder

Lunch Order Forms

I need to ask all parents to fill out a separate lunch form for each child in their family.  I realize this takes them an extra few minutes but it will cut many minutes out of the entering of orders.  I am having parents put 3 kids on one form and I enter orders by grade.

Attention Hot Lunch Purchasers

Younger children seem to be throwing a lot of hot lunches away.  Please check with your child to see if they are eating their hot lunch.  Some do not like what they buy, so it may be best to pack a lunch for them so they are not going hungry.

Pizza slices are huge and most of the younger children (kindergarten and 1st graders esp.) will only need to order one slice.

Thank you!
