The Lighthouse-May 23
Headmaster's Corner
Dear Friends,

Wow...field trips to the Zoo, whale watching off of Plymouth,
ACSI Music Competition at Gordon College (where SSCA captured several prizes),
touring the Museum of Fine Arts (the El Greco exhibit), visits to the Boston
Islamic Center and to the Aquarium, these are among the many and varied
"out of class" learning
experiences that contribute to the extraordinarily rich educational experience
provided recently to our students by our gifted teachers here at SSCA.
Meanwhile on campus, Mrs. Stiles 7th and 8th grade science
students out did themselves with their creative scientific and technological
inventions displayed with such enthusiasm at the annual Science Night.
We are finishing this school year with a
flourish...hallelujah.
Sincerely,
Ted Chamberlain, Head of School

Interactive Inventions Emerge--SSCA's Science Night
Thursday night brought SSCA's annual Science Night, an
exciting event showcasing the school's seventh and eighth graders and their
innovative inventions and extreme experiments. This year's science lab once
again provided all sorts of interesting exhibits and demonstrations. The
seventh graders' inventions were judged by a panel of former and current
students and parents.
In the "Most Creative" category: 3rd place went to
Sarah Coughlin for "Hair Caddy", 2nd place to Audrey Hoffman for
"The Bunk Bed Table", and 1st place to Taylor Cross, for
"Herbee". In the "Most Useful" category: 3rd
place went to Brian Gammon for "The Piano Pouch", 2nd place to Austin
Davy for "The No-Slip Music Stand", and 1st place to Leah Nevill for
"Book Bus".
Congratulations to all students who participated, and thank
you to all faculty, staff and parents who made the evening possible with their
time and service.
Lady Warriors Softball
The 2008 girls softball team had one of their best
years in recent memory, with a winning record of 7-6. The team was well-rounded
and played terrific defense. Opposing coaches
and umpires often remarked after the game that they were very impressed
with the attitude and skills of the players. Sophomore JuJu Atwater was singled
out several times as one of the best shortstops they had seen on any team in
the area. Also strong defensively were catcher CeCe Edwards, second baseman
JoJo Decoste, and leftfielder Emily Kertzman. Pitchers Liz Sardano and Megan
Hallinan were terrific all year long as well. The girls had several big
victories, including a 16-4 win over South Shore VoTech and an 11-7 come from
behind win over Trinity Catholic. Other highlights included strong hitting by
Emily Sardano, Sarah Colligan, Kelly Rooney and Jess Callahan and the
tremendous potential of newcomer 7th grader Taylor Cross.
